DIY Easy Painted Wood Sign

Fly me to the moon wooden sign

Want to make a sign on a budget as a gift, as some home decor for your own house? It is a lot simpler than you think. So my 15-year-old sister’s birthday was coming up and I have to say I never know what she is into or what she likes because she is in the teenage stage and likes something new like every month. So she is really into music at the moment and loves Frank Sinatra. So I found an awesome song of his that would be perfect. My sisters name means New Moon so I thought the lyric was perfect. So let’s get it started you can use any quote you like and its fairly simple to create. So first find a quote you like. Now supplies.

  • Wood
  • Cutting machine (Cricut, Silhouette)
  • Craft Paint
  • Stain
    • DIY stain: Vinegar, Steel Wool 0000 and Mason Jar
  • Jute
  • Staple Gun
  • Contact Paper
    • Color & transparent
  • Mod Podge
  • Small paint brushes

Alright so let’s get this going first things first I purchased a small piece of wood that was already sanded and cut to what I would like. I believe I bought it at JoAnn’s and it was about 3 dollars for the wood. It was bright plain wood. I saw on Pinterest to make your own stain. And I just had to try this. You will need some steel wool 0000 it has to be super fine. Then any type of vinegar. Different vinegar’s makes different stain color I just used plain ol Distilled vinegar that cost like a $1. You will need a jar I used a mason jar and put the steel wool in and filled up the jar. Let this sit for about 3 days. The steel wool dissolves and watch the magic happen. I got a sponge brush and put it on wax paper and painted over the wood. At first it just looks like water on wood but after it dries it darkens. It was absolutely amazing to watch vinegar do that! After it had dried I read that it can easily rub off so I varnished it with some paint finished from a spray bottle. And let it dry and this was the final result. I wish I had taken a picture of the original wood but I simply forgot.

Now your ready to make your stencil. Your going to need your cutting machine. I personally just got a Silhouette Cameo 2 I wanted a Cricut explore but I got a killer deal on Ebay so I compromised. Next download some free fonts and create your stencil. I measured the sign and how big the letters will need to be to fit. I first printed it out on some paper so I can measure for the sign as a guide. Next you can use vinyl but that stuff is not cheap my friend. So go to your local Dollar Tree and find some contact paper your going to need ones with designs or colors and one that is transparent. You do not want to use the transparent paper as your stencil it does not stick as well. The transparent paper is for transfer paper. Use your design contact paper for the stencil. I first cut the designs of the moon and stars to paint on first and did the wording separate after as well.mod podge signpainted wood

Alright before just slapping some paint on the stencils. Your going to want to paint some Mod Podge over the wording or designs. Your going to want to paint with the grain of the wood. Let it dry then start your painting. You are using the Mod Podge to stop bleeding. Now start painting. I used 2 coats of paint and waited for the designs and letter to dry before moving on to the next. After your all done painting I want for it to dry. Just to make sure  I waited for 24 hours. Once dried I Varnished again to seal the craft paint. I let this dry for 24 hours and your done with painting. Now what to use to hang it up. I was got a picture and saw how they let it hang and it was so simple and inexpensive I had to try it. I went and bought some Jute and used a staple gun.

Now your going to measure how you want to hang it. I did not want the Jute to show so I made the string as long as it would need to be to not show. Now your going to tie a knot at the end and staple right above the knot in designated area.
